A Date with Destiny…

By February 9, 2025Devotional

Three-Peat… fourth Super Bowl in six years! Are they destined to do something that has never been done before? I was watching several of the Kansas City Chiefs players being interviewed and they were talking about the short ten minute celebration they had after they won the Super Bowl last year. Then, Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and several other players started talking about prepping for this year and how they wanted a third win in a row in the most prestigious football game on the planet Earth.

I watched some of the pre-game stuff earlier this afternoon and I have to admit that the Fox network has pulled out all the stops and invited many of the most notable broadcasters and stars of the game to weigh in with their thoughts about the outcome of this championship. Even Tom Brady is in town, and he was getting ready to broadcast his first Super Bowl game.

Most of the sports stars were on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, which now has the distinction of having hosted more Super Bowls than any other venue. And let’s face it, New Orleans knows how to party! Interestingly, Brady made a comment that he has never seen the revelry before. The times he has played in New Orleans for the title, he said that the team was on a business trip and they had no business partying in the French Quarter. It was an interesting admission from the winningest quarterback of all time.

As the game got underway, it was evident that the Kansas City Chiefs were out to do something that had never been done. However, the Eagles would have none of it. The first half was all Philadelphia and the second half wasn’t much different. I was struck by several other comments that Tom Brady made. For example, he said that he could tell from the footwork of Patrick Mahomes that this young phenomenal quarterback just didn’t seem confident in his offensive line – clearly that has shaken the team’s confidence.

While it is clear that a three-peat just wasn’t meant to be, it is also clear that Philadelphia just outplayed their opponents and deserved the Lombardi Trophy, one of the most coveted awards in all of sports. All that work on both sides of the ball, and tonight belongs to the team and the fans of Philadelphia. They kept their date with destiny, foiling the attempt for the Chiefs in the meantime.

It occurs to me that all believers have a date with destiny as well. Only our eternal security is guaranteed. We don’t have to fight for it, or beat a number of opponents to reap our reward. In fact, we don’t even have to worry about being disappointed. We are assured of a “win”…  All we have to do is to profess our believe in Jesus as the Son of God; our Lord and Savior – the source of our salvation.

Our verse for tonight gives us the words of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of John. The apostle tells us, in John 10:27-29, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.” Hear the assurance in the words of Jesus? Jesus is so zealous that he affirms that we will never be snatched from His hand; or the hand of His Father. What words of comfort these are!

My encouragement this evening is that Jesus wants us to rest in the peace that we are secure in His care. Nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus. My prayer is that we will enjoy the peace that comes from the secure knowledge that we have a wonderful date with destiny and there is nothing that we have to worry about. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
