I was driving home yesterday evening and was thinking about what I would write about tonight. And there, on the car directly in front of me, the rear license plate caught my attention. While I sometimes have some difficulty deciphering the phrases on specialty plates, the one in front of me didn’t take too much effort – especially with the huge fish symbol on the left rear edge of the trunk. Apparently, the owner of the car is Christian and the license plate reflects a theological idea that we all consider at one time or another.
That is, is anyone worthy of God? After all, we have all sinned and therefore, we all far short of the standard for heaven – at least in our own power. But that is exactly why God sent His Son, Jesus, to earth. To live among us as a fully human, yet fully God, example for us to follow. When Christ was crucified and then rose from the dead on the third day, he had paid the price, once and for all, for every last one of us. He rebuilt the bridge that had separated us from God – and while we aren’t worthy in our own right – Jesus paid the price for us.
The license plate highlights the fact that God didn’t find anyone worthy. And there are various verses in the Scripture that confirm the fact that we all fall short – not one of us makes the grade of being able to earn our way into heaven. Frankly, it’s a good reminder for all of us. While none of us as humans are worthy, God is worthy of praise and honor and glory. Our verse for this evening comes from Rev. 4:11, “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” My encouragement this evening is that through the efforts of Jesus Christ, we all have the opportunity to being united with God in heaven. My prayer is that you will sincerely attempt to determine your calling and try to live a life worthy of the great gift of eternal life that has been given to you. Have a great day in the Lord, grace and peace…
